Charcoal Portrait of Joey and Scruffy - From Start to Finish

Little Joey and Scruffy were another commission for one of Claire's customers (at Jets Doggy Day Care).

They were both quite challenging to draw but in opposite ways. Joey has a dark coat which can sometimes make getting detail across rather difficult in charcoal. The very aptly named Scruffy on the other hand is a Westie - Westies are probably one of the hardest dogs to draw in charcoal as they are white and it's therefore quite tough to get the detail in without making them look too dark!

It took me around eight hours to complete this portrait which was a medium-sized sketch and I finished it off with a black coloured mount.
